How Mickey Shiloh Made It with SoundBetter

Kim Taylor Bennett / February 25, 2021

In the latest installment of this video series we find out how Mickey — an artist who's written songs for Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Jason Derulo and more — utilizes music-talent platform SoundBetter to fund her life and her art.

Mickey Shiloh knows that success comes in many forms and that when it comes to music there really isn’t a linear path. The Bay Area-born songwriter has been working since she was a teenager, writing hooks for everyone from Britney to Iggy Azalea, Teyana Taylor to Pitbull, Jason Derulo to J.Lo to Janet Jackson, all the while writing and releasing her own music (including a track that went fully viral thanks to Kylie Jenner’s Snapchat).

In the early days of her career — and by her own admission — despite these high profile credits, Mickey found that this sort of work wasn’t fully supporting her financially yet. There was always the option of getting a nine-to-five, but she thought, surely there must be an avenue in the music space she could monetize more effectively? Put simply, when Mickey joined SoundBetter in 2015, it changed her life: she was able to continue to make her own music, while providing melodies, demo vocals, and more, to an additional pool of clients who were finding her services via SoundBetter.

Named in Forbes 30 Under 30 in their annual class of 2019, Mickey is an entrepreneur in the truest sense of the word: a multi-platinum songwriter, indie record label founder (Bdrm Rcrds), mentor, author, and of course an artist in her own right. She understands the hustle, and for this 29-year-old, her work with SoundBetter is both foundational and essential.

Watch the video above to find out more about Mickey’s journey, plus there’s a bunch of other SoundBetter stories to check out including how Minnesota artist Michael Shynes made it big with Polish electronic group Komodo, and how New Zealand indie act Yumi Zouma expanded their sonic horizons using the platform.
