It’s hard to overstate the importance of songwriters to the music-making process. They’re responsible for the lyrics, melodies, beats and chords that make up the songs we love. But as integral as they are, songwriters are often behind the scenes and not in the fore—their names listed in credits and the full breadth of their contributions only known to industry insiders. At Spotify, we’re committed to supporting songwriters all over the world and creating more opportunities for them.

Today, as part of our effort to support the songwriter community, we’re excited to officially introduce the Songwriters Hub— a new place on Spotify for listeners to find Written By playlists from both established and emerging songwriters, listen to podcasts about the craft of songwriting, and discover a rotating cast of featured songwriters and cultural moments each month.

At launch, we’re highlighting the work of prolific songwriter Nija, following the release of her work with Ariana Grande on her latest opus, Positions

“Having a hub for songwriters is extremely important because people need to know who these people are who are helping create the soundtrack to our lives. Songwriters deserve to be praised for their contributions just as much as artists and producers. A lot of times we get the short end of the stick, so I’m glad that there’s a place where people can see who’s writing their favorite songs.” – Nija

The new Hub comes on the heels of other important launches with songwriters and publishers this year, including the continued rollout of hundreds of Songwriter Pages (where you can view a songwriter’s portfolio and credits) and Written By playlists (where you can stream that songwriter’s work). The pages and playlists honor the extensive and versatile catalogs of these creators — and can be discovered through the Song Credits on their tracks on Spotify.

Since we launched these pages and playlists, we’ve seen huge interest from listeners who are excited to find and follow their next favorite songwriter, and we built the Songwriters Hub to make this discovery even easier. The songs included on these pages and playlists, and now found in the Hub, have already garnered more than 127B streams across Spotify and we’re looking forward to adding more pages for more songwriters who listeners can discover and enjoy. Today’s latest pages include Sia, Ant Clemons, Bebe Rexha, Gregg Wattenberg, Noonie Bao, Ashley Gorley and Irving Berlin.

Earlier this year, we also experimented with giving three songwriters (Cautious Clay, Mike Dean and Raye) an opportunity to share behind-the-scenes anecdotes about their careers, with playlist video integrations on their Written By playlists.

Finally, a challenging year has made many of us adapt the ways we create and collaborate while working remotely, and songwriters are no exception. To share ideas and solutions from the broader songwriting community, we launched two new video series on Instagram: Writer’s Pad and Songwriter Saturday. Writer’s Pad has given us a glimpse of the ways songwriters and producers have adapted their at-home studio spaces during 2020, as they've let us in on their secrets to staying creative and productive. This series has taken us all around the world to the workspaces of The Rascals, Ali Stone, Kat Dahlia, and Salaam Remi.

Similarly, Songwriter Saturday has allowed us to sit down (virtually!) with Julia Michaels and Boi-1da to hear about their artistic journeys and reflect on some of their proudest moments and releases.

As we close out another year, we’re looking forward to working with the songwriter community again in 2021, finding new ways to collaborate, inspire one another, and support them with more tools and opportunities.
